Most retaining walls under 600mm in height do not require council approval in NSW. However, walls exceeding this height — or walls on sloped sites, near boundaries, or where drainage is a factor — may require a DA or CDC. Luke will advise you on approval requirements as part of the onsite assessment, and can manage the process where needed.
Timber sleeper walls typically start from $250–$350 per metre for straightforward sites. Sandstone block and structural concrete walls are higher — typically $500–$900/m depending on height, drainage requirements and site access. Timber sleeper walls use treated structural pine or hardwood — cost-effective, natural look, typically suited to walls under 1.2m. They have a lifespan of 15–25 years depending on drainage and timber grade. Sandstone block walls are more premium aesthetically and structurally, suited to higher walls and heritage-style properties. Both require proper drainage behind the wall to perform long-term.
Drainage is the single most critical factor in retaining wall longevity. Water pressure build-up behind a wall without proper drainage is the leading cause of wall failure — regardless of material. Black Stag Projects installs agricultural drain pipe, gravel backfill and appropriate drainage outlets as standard on every wall build. Cutting corners here is why cheap walls fail.
